The shoebill stork

The shoebill stork is a bird species that has gained a lot of attention and admiration because of its uniquely odd look. This bird gets its name from its beak which is shaped like a shoe. However, this huge beak is not just for looks no, it is a lethal weapon for hunting. The shoebill stork is an incredibly large bird standing at about 150 centimeters with a wing span of over 260 centimeters. The shoebill stork is a master of the swallow waters as it dwells in the wetlands and swamps all its lifetime. Shoebills are very solitary and often come together for reproduction and they remain in their solitude. They also nest alone and rear their chicks solitarily until they leave the nest to manage on their own. The shoebill is an oviparous bird that lays one to three eggs however one chick always leaves the nest because of competition. Unlike other birds that hunt with utmost speed and swiftly target their prey before they can react, the shoebill stork is however a stalker. It often stands on one leg very still hoping for the fish to come close and they target the fish with swiftness and immense vigor and accuracy, seizes, and then tears the prey with the help of its big beak. The diet of a shoebill stork is made up of mainly lungfish but it also feeds on amphibians, reptiles, and even small mammals.
