Overview
When we talk of the Virunga classic package, we are talking about a tremendous trip to the magical Virunga Volcanoes National park characterized by initial accommodation at different places i.e. one night at Mikeno Lodge, another night at Ngila, another night at Nyiragongo Volcano and other two nights at Mikeno Lodge. Tours to the park start from Goma at 1300 hours on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Upon arrival at Grande Barriere border crossing around 11:30am, you will have to check in with Virunga Tourism Office which is located just opposite passport control within the Grande Barriere border post building. One of the essential tools is the gorilla trekking permits which are given to visitors by Tourism staff before they are transported to Mikeno Lodge in Rumangabo / park headquarters.
You will then be served with a lipsmirking lunch as soon as you arrive at Mikeno Lodge and then embark on a luxurious afternoon characterized by several options such as exploration of the numerous trails, bird watching and paying a visit to Virunga’ Congo hounds.
After a delicious morning breakfast, you will embark on the road to Bukima Ranger post from where you will meet your guide / ranger who will lead you to the briefing point before entering the jungles for gorilla trekking. Depending on the location of the gorilla groups being trekked, the activity lasts for about one to two hours. Gorilla trekking here is an expedition characterized by hiking, walking the difficult trails, walking through the thickets but still, it remains an extraordinary adventure that turns moments into memory.
You will then return to Ngila for a delicious lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon you will be given an opportunity to explore the Bukima area, visit the park’s bamboo project, go birding or spend time on the veranda enjoying scenic views of the area.
At around 8:30am, you will embark on the second Gorilla trekking adventure in the Virunga national park. Upon return, a delicious lunch will be served at Ngila before being transferred to Mikeno Lodge from where you will spend a luxurious afternoon while exploring park headquarters.
Every day at Virunga national park is a brand new day! Day 4 of this classical package is a day of relaxation. You will visit the surrounding areas of Mikeno such as the magical Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage Centre, widow’s workshop, bird watching, to mention but a few.
Before being transferred to Kibati Ranger post, you will have a delicious breakfast early in the morning. It is at this point that you will be briefed and get an opportunity of hiring porters. You will then embark on the six hour climb to the summit from where you will spend a night.
By 6:30am, you will have started your journey in company of fellow travelers back to Kibati. The journey usually lasts for about four hours. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Goma and cross the Grande Barriere and get a flight back home via Kigali International airport.
