Can I do Gorilla Trekking twice in Uganda?

Yes, gorilla trekking in Uganda can be done at any time of year. Most travelers embarking on a gorilla trekking safari usually opt for a one-time gorilla trek rather than multiple treks, which increases their chances of seeing different gorilla families. Uganda is a renowned gorilla trekking destination, after harboring the largest population of mountain gorillas in the world, which are found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Seeing the gorilla twice in Uganda is often referred to as Double Gorilla Trekking. This is one of the best safari options, offering a chance to see different gorilla families and learn about their complex social structures, as well as experience the diverse gorilla regions, each providing unique experiences.

Where to do Double Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda can only be done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, which offer a chance to trek the gorillas twice, whether you are a first-time safari goer or a frequent traveller.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Uganda’s most popular destination for gorilla trekking, situated in the southwestern part of the country, and consists of over 400 mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park consists of several habituated gorilla families, which can be found in the four gorilla tracking regions of Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma and Nkuringo.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The park is located at the southwestern border of Uganda and is also home to Mountain gorillas. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park consists of one large gorilla family (Nyakagezi), which consists of many members that offer an incredible gorilla trekking experience.

How much is the Double Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Just like the normal gorilla trekking permit costs, the Double gorilla trekking experience requires booking two gorilla trekking permits in different gorilla regions or national parks. This is because the gorilla trekking experience cannot be done at once. The price of a gorilla trekking permit costs USD 800 for Foreign non-residents, USD 700 for Foreign Residents, USD 500 for Residents of Africa and UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens. The double gorilla trekking experience is done at different intervals, which offers a chance to meet more than one gorilla family and learn more about their way of life and behaviors.

Plan your double gorilla trekking experience today!

Choose different Gorilla sectors: Uganda offers a chance to encounter mountain gorillas in more than one place, including Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which consist of almost half of the total population of mountain gorillas in the world. Bwindi alone consists of 4 gorilla tracking regions of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, which offer challenging treks yet are incredibly rewarding.

Space the trekking dates: Since gorilla trekking can be done only once per day, it is important to select flexible days that will allow you to execute the next gorilla trekking experience with no challenges.

Book with us a reputable tour operator: For a successful gorilla trekking experience, we recommend that you choose a reputable tour operator who will carefully plan your double gorilla trekking tour with arrangements of gorilla trekking permits, accommodation and other safari activities.

Book your trip in advance: gorilla trekking experiences are best done during the dry season, which runs from December to February and June to September. However, during this time, gorilla trekking permits are limited and highly competitive and therefore, visitors are always advised to book their gorilla trekking permits in advance to secure availability of the permits and specific gorilla trekking regions.
