Best Weather for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is one of the most fascinating wildlife experiences that offers a chance for travellers to encounter the chimpanzees in their natural habitats, unlike the traditional game drives where visitors on a safari see wildlife from a distance in a safari car. The chimpanzee Trekking Experience offers a chance of getting up close with the chimpanzees, which are regarded as man’s closest cousins since they share about 98.7% DNA with that of Human Beings. While planning to embark on a chimpanzee trekking safari in Uganda, it is important to consider the weather and climate of Uganda, which may directly affect the chimpanzee trekking experience and your overall time in Uganda. Today, we take you through the details of the best weather for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, where to see the chimpanzees, trekking costs, what to pack and where to stay for a chimpanzee trekking safari in Uganda.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

The chimpanzee Trekking experience basically involves a guided walk through the tropical forests in search of the habituated chimpanzee societies and spending one hour in their presence while observing and learning about their behaviours and lifestyle. Usually, chimpanzee Trekking Experiences are done in the morning and evening hours, which is regarded as the best time to see the chimpanzees while they are still active. During the chimpanzee trekking experience, you not only encounter chimpanzees but also a variety of other animal species, as well as different kinds of birds.

Uganda is home to over 5000 chimpanzees, including the habituated chimpanzees, which offer a chance to visitors on a primate safari in Uganda. Habituation means that chimpanzees are trained to live in human presence without changing their natural behaviours, which makes the chimpanzee trekking experience safe, interactive and rewarding.

Best weather for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Uganda enjoys a tropical climate, which is characterised by two dry seasons and two wet seasons, making it an all-year-round chimpanzee trekking destination. However, the best time to go for a chimpanzee trekking safari depends on what kind of adventure you want to experience.

During the dry season, which runs from December to February and June to August, the weather conditions are predictable and favourable for outdoor activities such as chimpanzee Trekking. During these seasons, the forest trails are less muddy, the vegetation is less dense, and chimpanzees are easier to track and photograph.

However, Chimpanzee Trekking can also be done during the rainy season, which runs from March to May and September to November. The weather comes with plenty of rainfall, which makes the chimpanzee trekking experience more challenging with slippery trails as well as thick vegetation, which may hinder the wildlife viewing experience.

Where to do Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda?

Kibale Forest National Park: The park is Uganda’s prime chimpanzee trekking destination, located in the western part of Uganda and is home to over 1500 chimpanzee individuals, often dubbed as the primate capital of the world. The park is not only a home for chimpanzees but also other primate species and wildlife such as the Ugandan red colobus monkey, black-and-white colobus monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, mantled guereza, olive baboon, grey-cheeked mangabey, potto, Demidoff’s galago (bush baby), vervet monkey, patas monkey and over 300 bird species.

Budongo Forest Reserve: Budongo Forest is located at the southern edge of Murchison Falls National Park and is home to a large number of chimpanzees and other primates. The Forest offers an excellent chimpanzee trekking experience and an optional wildlife safari in the northern part of Murchison Falls National Park for visitors who do not want to travel long distances.

Kyambura Gorge: Often called the “Valley of Apes”, and is located at the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, covered with a dramatic forest which is home to chimpanzees and some other primate species. Kyambura Gorge offers a unique chimpanzee trekking experience since there is no overcrowding of tourists like in Kibale National Park. However, the chimpanzee sightings here are fewer compared to Kibale since there are fewer chimpanzee individuals.
