Mountain Muhabura is the tallest mountain among the Virunga ranges in Uganda and third tallest of all the eight Virunga volcanoes. This mountain stands at 4,127 meters above sea level and you are able to challenge yourself while on the hike. It is an extinct volcano located at the border of Uganda, D.R. Congo, and Rwanda. Muhabura volcano is shaped like a cone with volcanic ashes and other different substances at the lower slopes.

This is an excellent spot to view different birds, big animals like the buffaloes, elephants and the endangered mountain gorillas especially from the Ugandan side. Sometimes you can get to encounter the dangerous and aggressive buffaloes but game rangers are always there to protect you.

This mountain is known to be the most difficult to climb among the 8 volcanoes due to its steep nature. You are required to be mentally and physically fit and flexible enough to be able to reach the summit and ascend back. Climbing this mountain in Uganda demands you to first get in touch with the resident guides from UWA who will take you through the whole process. The climb starts in the morning and takes around 5 to 8 hours to reach the summit. You are first of all briefed before the hiking where you are given some of the history about this mountain. Ensure that you have the required equipment that will help you to hike like the walking sticks, hiking boots among others.

You can as well come along with your packed lunch and water. On the Ugandan side, before reaching the summit, you have to make two stops. The first stop is when you ascend to around 3,117 meters, here some of the hikers are requested to take some rest and eat lunch as well as drinking some water and the second stop is when you it’s now 3,860 meters above sea level. Those that feel fit to continue embark on the difficult hike with lots of determination and fitness because there is no going back until you reach the summit.

As you move closer, you start to feel cold because this mountain is filled with mist throughout the year. Make sure you have clothing that will help you from catching a cold. The lucky individuals who make it to the summit find splendid scenery and breathtaking countryside views of the lakes plus other volcanoes like the Sabinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi, Bisoke among others.

You are able to encounter some primates, birds and other mammals like elephants. The crater lake at the summit is a chance for swimmers to enjoy though it’s very cold and it is usually not advised to swim because one may contract a cold.

While at the summit you are able to see twin lakes at the Rwandan side that are Ruhundo and Burera as well as lake Bunyonyi from the Ugandan side.

Reaching the summit helps you encounter several physical features in different places at the same time and in one place. Climbing Mount Muhabura is very challenging so one is advised to be fit and flexible enough to be able to enjoy this activity.
