CHIMPANZEE TREKKING IN BUDONGO FOREST.

Budongo forest is part of the great Murchison falls conservation area in Masindi District. This is the biggest natural forest in Uganda covering an area of 825 sq. km. This ancient forest is divided into three sectors, namely; Kaniyo-Pabidi, Busingiro and Sonso. The forest is an extension of the Murchison falls national park. Chimpanzee trekking is the major highlight of any tour carried out in Budongo forest, a home to over 600 chimpanzees grouped into four communities.

On the way to Murchison falls national park, you can stop by  Budongo forest and carry on this enthralling activity. Chimpanzee habituation and research in the forest is managed and controlled by the Jane Goodall institute of research. Being a thick forest, it attracts rain which supports the growth of fruits and other food species hence a good breeding place for these primates. 

Budongo forest not only offers chimpanzee trekking adventure but also other amazing activities to do. It is home to different mammals like forest buffaloes, elephants, duikers, hogs, bush pigs among others. It is also home to other primate species like the blue monkeys, olive baboons, Vervet monkeys, mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, among others.

Not forgetting that one can also watch birds in this forest because there is a population of over 360 different bird species like the Cassin’s Spinetail, Emerald Cuckoo, African Shrike Flycatcher, Blue-throated Roller, Chestnut Crowned laughingthrush, Black and White Casqued Hornbills, Black-headed Paradise Flycatcher, African Pied, Brown Twin spot, Cassin’s Hawk Eagle, Cassin’s Honeyguide, Cameroon Somber Greenbul, among others.

HOW CHIMPANZEE TREKKING IS DONE IN BUDONGO FOREST

Chimpanzees share 98.8 % of their DNA with humans and are considered to be wise and intelligent. Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo forest is done in two phases, the morning and afternoon sessions. You are free to choose what will suit your schedule and itinerary. 

Trekking starts with a brief communication at the Kaniyo - Pabidi ecotourism site before heading into the forest.

The activity can be done between three and four hours or less depending on where these primates will be found. Once you get to encounter them, you are given one hour to spend with them as you learn about their ways of life which includes breastfeeding, feeding, gathering fruits among others. Feel free to take photos of all these moments. 

COST OF A CHIMPANZEE PERMIT

The cost of a chimpanzee permit goes for USD 120 for foreign nationals and USD 75 for Ugandan citizens, one is kindly advised to book in advance because there is a maximum number of permits sold per day. With this permit, you are allowed to access this chimpanzee territory as long as you are fit and healthy. The experience includes nature walks, bird watching, animal viewing among others.

OTHER ACTIVITIES TO DO WHILE IN BUDONGO FOREST

Bird watching: Budongo forest is one of the excellent places a bird lover can choose to go bird watching. A variety of birds filled in this place can be watched for over a full day. Some of the rare species that you will get to encounter are yellow footed fly catcher, Illadopsis puveli and Parmoptila woodhouse among others. You are able to spot around 360 different bird species in this area. 

Chimpanzee habituation: Habituation is different from trekking. During habituation, these primates are trained for a long period of time to get used to humans. This process can take about 2 or 3 years. This process is more rewarding and satisfying since you are given a full day to spend with the primates in the forests. 

Nature walks: Budongo nature walks take you through the Kaniyo-Pabidi ecotourism center which is known to have tall ancient mahogany trees and savannah plains of Murchison fall park, big mammals like buffaloes, leopards among others.
