Overview
Choosing this safari is the best option where you will encounter both rare mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, north of Kigali. This park is amazing, because it is located in the Virunga ranges consisting of 5 of 8 of the Virunga Mountains.
Trekking for these primates lasts an hour on each trek while in their presence. The golden monkeys are like babies where they enjoy the flashlight cameras, unlike the mountain gorillas. You have the option of taking a short Kigali city tour.
Detailed safari itinerary
Arrive at the airport meet and greet the tour guide who will take you through a quick briefing about the tour, purchase some equipment that you may use like the camera batteries, insect repellant among others.
Transfer to Volcanoes national park is well known to have the remaining endangered mountain gorillas, but also hosts 5 of 8 mountain volcanoes and these are Mount. Sabyinyo, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, Karisimbi and Muhaburamountains. There are other attractions in the park such as the bird species, reptiles and big mammals. On arrival, check-in and relax at the lodge.
This is an exciting day which will begin with breakfast at the lodge and then head to the park headquarters for a briefing where the rules and regulations will be followed while in the forest. You will be told not to feed wild animals, not making noise, keep distance, don't use flashlights, don't trek in case you have an infectious disease like cough and flu among others.
Penetrate the forest as you search for these primates and you will find them in a family headed by a silverback. Enjoy their presence for an hour and then trek back to the office where you will be rewarded with a certificate. You will return to the lodge for lunch and leisure
Head to the park offices this morning after breakfast where you will engage in the briefing that will cover several sections like rules and regulations, information about the forest, history among others. You will be told to use flashlight cameras since these primates enjoy the flashlight cameras and you will witness them coming closer.
You will then head to the forest to start the search where you will spot different attractions and meet golden monkeys in the bamboo forest as they jump from one bamboo to another. Have another with them while enjoying the best moments. Head back to the lodge for lunch and engage in an optional activity of community tour where you will be allowed to learn about Kinyarwanda culture through speaking, music, dance, drama and maybe storytelling.
Have breakfast and transfer back to Kigali city and if time allows, you will visit some of the attractions like the Rwanda genocide memorial center, local markets, Palace museum among others. You will then, be dropped at Kigali International Airport, hence marking the end of your tour.
