Overview
Our Nyiragongo package is about exploring the spectacular Mount Nyiragongo, an active Volcano that forms part of the Virunga massif in East and Central Africa. This 11385-feet mountain features the largest Lava Crater in the whole World with width of 2 kilometers and depth of 250 meters.
This remarkable tourist spot is surprisingly feared for its disastrous eruptions whereby over 2000 people died in 1977, destroying a large part of the nearby Town (Goma) in 2002 and in the latest eruption of May 2021, over 30 people lost lives and homes were destroyed although there is no record of affecting tourists. However, its beautiful Lava Lake makes it unmissable and unavoidable by mountain climbers. For your 2-day Nyiragongo package, the start and end location is Goma Town, while overnight is at the Nyiragongo summit shelters.
Detailed Itinerary
We shall arrive Grande Barriere Border building as early as half past six in the morning and finalize the check-in process at Virunga Tourism Office by 8:00am, on the day of the scheduled hike. It should be noted that the Tourism Office is within the border crossing building and is face to face with the passport control office. It is during the check-in process that we shall get our Congo tourist visas as well as Mount Nyiragongo hiking permits.
Then leave the Grande Barriere border building behind and get transferred to Kibati Ranger Post, the trailhead of this hike. We start ascending by 10:00am and transverse through the five phases of the climb, arriving after 4-6 hours. Physical fitness is required because it is certainly a challenging hike, which gets worse in the rainy season because of the muddy trails. Take as much time as possible to admire the beauty and exceptionality of the Crater Lake while taking photos, then retire to the Camp for dinner and overnight.
By 5:00am you should already be awake to have breakfast and begin descending back to Kibati Ranger Post at the base of Mount. Nyiragongo, by 6:00am. Expect a less strenuous (but not easy) descent compared to ascent but on arriving the bottom, your driver will be waiting to transport you back to the Town of Goma.
Drop-off point is Grande Barriere border crossing and this brings your 2-day Nyiragongo package to an end.
